'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Rashid, AH 170-193 / AD 786-809. Hemidrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 2.21 g, 8 h), citing governor ʿAbd Allah [ibn Qahtaba] (PYE 139-141 = AD 790-791), Tabaristan, PYE 140 = AD 791. Draped Sasanian-style bust to right, wearing an elaborate crown; behind head, ‘GDE / ʾp̄zwt’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʿAbd Allāh’ (‘ʿAbd Allah’ in Arabic); in the outer margin to left and right, ‘nywk ˗ ʾp̄d’ (‘good ˗ wonderful’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar, flanked by two attendants; above altar, crescent and star; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, ‘tpwlstʾn’ (‘Tabaristan’ in Pahlavi). Album 70. Rare. Struck from somewhat worn dies and with flan faults on the edge, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
